The Candidates Who Could Cost the GOP the Senate

Todd Akin isn't the only candidate who could cost the Republicans the Senate. His "legitimate rape" comments are the focus of a furious effort to push him into resigning to allow a more electable Republican to take his place in Missouri and save the party its hopes of winning a majority in both Houses of Congress. Akin's not the only one who's put that cause in jeopardy, though.?"How many Senate seats have Rs thrown away in recent cycles? At least 2 in '06, 3 in '10. Any in '08?" The National Review's Ramesh Ponnuru?tweeted Monday afternoon, after Akin apologized on the radio but before CNN's Piers Morgan mocked him for being a no-show. Republicans aren't able to coast on their party brand this year, making it much more important to have good candidates,?Politico's Alexander Burns notes Tuesday. "While Democrats started out back on their heels, defending 23 seats to the GOP?s 10, the unexpected weakness of several Republican candidates has left Republicans far short of the easy takeover that some once anticipated," he writes.?

RELATED: Claire McCaskill and How to Attack the Opponent You're Rooting For

But while several candidates have made dumb mistakes, it's worth noting that they aren't n00bs who've never run for office before. And they're not all that far from the positions of the Republican Party. Despite all the Republicans denouncing Akin's rape comments, the party's platform this year opposes all abortions?even in the case of rape. That was the position Akin so poorly articulated. In fact, part of the conservative anger with Akin is not over what he said, but how he said it. Here's a guide to three of the Senate candidates who've been choosing their words?not their positions?poorly.

RELATED: Republicans See Few Ways to Avoid Loss With Todd Akin

Candidate: Todd Akin, running for Senate in Missouri against incumbent Claire McCaskill.

RELATED: Todd Akin Acknowledges That No Rape Is Legitimate

R?sum?:? While Republicans seem quite shocked at Akin's comments, they shouldn't be so surprised, since he's been hanging around Washington for more than a decade. Before his six terms as a congressman, Akin served 12 years in the Missouri House. He's not some little known political novice.

RELATED: NRA Has Been Holding a Grudge Against Dick Lugar for 10 Years

Dumb Thing:?"It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, [pregnancy after rape is] really rare. If it?s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

RELATED: Congress Is No Fun Anymore

Poll Numbers: A SurveyUSA poll found that 54 percent of Missourians think Akin should drop out. Yet Akin is ahead of McCaskill 44 percent to 43 percent, Public Policy Polling finds. PPP leans left, and the National Review's Jim Geraghty speculates that the pollster skewed its sample to overrepresent Republicans to show Akin stronger than he actually is and persuade him from dropping out. But Akin was performing better against McCaskill in earlier polls -- a SurveyUSA poll from earlier this month found him leading by more, 51 percent to McCaskill's 40 percent.

Candidate: Rick Berg, running for an open Senate seat in North Dakota against former state attorney general Heidi Heitkamp.

R?sum?: Berg has served one term in Congress, but before that, he was a state legislator for 15 years.

Dumb Thing: Berg is not quite sure how to run against a woman. The campaign ran an ad with four elderly women sitting in a diner and gossipping about how they just couldn't trust Heitkamp, perhaps because the campaign thought criticism of a woman would be more palatable coming from women? But the ad attracted a ton of YouTube commenters, who said the ad was like an old folks' Mean Girls. After The Huffington Post wrote about the jokes, the campaign deleted the old comments and blocked new ones. Then Berg ran an ad touting his support of a former YWCA chairwoman, which the YWCA asked him to take down, because it could be taken as an endorsement. The ad was taken off YouTube last week. And a Crossroads GPS ad was taken down because of a false claim against Heitkamp involving federal funding for planes. Meanwhile, Heitkamp has been noted for having a warm personality, and maybe more importantly, she's figured out a way to sell her vote for Obamacare by saying it contains an important amendment involving Medicare funding for North Dakota doctors. Politico declared she won both June and July.

Poll Numbers: Despite North Dakota being a Republican state, Berg is averaging only a 5 point lead. That doesn't average in a Democratic internal poll showing Heitkamp up by 6 points in late July. A Mason-Dixon poll in June showed Heitkamp ahead by a single point.

Candidate: Richard Mourdock, running for an open Senate seat in Indiana against Rep. Joe Donnelly.

R?sum?: Mourdock was elected state treasurer in 2006.

Dumb Thing: Mourdock's proud conservatism was great for winning the Republican primary, but it might not be so great for winning the general election. He said in May that he wanted to build Republican majorities so that "bipartisanship becomes having Democrats come our way." He's now being attacked by Democratic groups for saying Paul Ryan's plan to create vouchers for Medicare doesn't go far enough. Donnelly, meanwhile, is promising "bipartisan, common-sense leadership."

Poll Numbers: A poll by the right-leaning Rasmussen found Mourdock with just a 2-point lead in the Republican state in early August. A more recent Democratic poll put Donnelly up by 2 points.

Life Coach London ? With Life Coaching, Can We Change?

Why do my clients choose to work with me, to see a life coach? ?Because they want to change.

Often their first question is: ??Can I change??

Yes, change is possible.

We can change our confidence levels, our communication style, our behaviour, our achievements and the relationships we have.

What brings about change? ?Fundamentally, it?s about changing the programmes we run in our minds at both the conscious and unconscious levels; it?s about changing the patterns that are deeply engrained in us, that cause us to think and behave in the same old ways again and again.

And yes, this is possible.

Coaching with the use of NLP, Neuro Linguistic Programming, gives us the tools to question and to challenge our current thoughts and belief systems, and to reframe, to change those old programmes and patterns we are running in our minds.

The process is relatively quick and can be easily dealt with in the short term, in a number of life coaching sessions.

How does it work? ?When our current thinking patterns are challenged, the brain seeks new and different lines of thought and naturally, you start to create new patterns of thinking and as a result, new patterns of behaviour. ?When we think differently, by default we start to feel different, which causes us to behave differently too, hence the change.

Look forward to hearing from you if there?s a change you want make in your life.

Tips That Will Make Your Current Finance Work For You | Dantec ...

If you had kept a record of who you owed money to then perhaps your debt could have been avoided. It?s now time to buckle down and fix your credit. The following article includes some easy to follow advice to get you on the road to repairing your credit.
    ?
Attempts to defend negligence or bad credit will not succeed, even if they are justifiable. The creditors are only worried about results and numbers. It may even draw more attention to the blemish.
    ?
When you want to fix your credit, you need to start somewhere. Have a realistic plan and stay with it. Making changes to become a wise spender means you have to make a budget and rules, then follow them. Purchase nothing but the essentials. Ask yourself whether every purchase is both affordable and necessary, and only buy if the answer to both questions is ?yes?.
    ?
Secured credit cards are an effective way for you to start rebuilding your credit. Secured credit card applications have a high rate of approval because you must fund a security deposit against your credit limit. Limited spending and regular payments can turn a new credit account into a valuable credit repair tool.
    ?
If your credit is in need of significant repair, you should consider obtaining credit counseling services. They can teach you how to get rid of all you owe and still live each month. In the long run, you are going to have to stop using your cards and agree to pay an amount toward each one every month.
    ?
Get a written copy of any payment plan you negotiate with a creditor. This is the only way that you have of protecting yourself. Once you make the final payment, get a statement that verifies that the debt has been satisfied and send it to the various credit reporting agencies.
    ?
Try and pay down any revolving account balances in order to boost your credit score. By lowering your credit card balances, you will be able to improve your credit score. When balances reach anywhere from 20-100% of your available credit balances (in 20% intervals), the FICO system will make a note.
    ?
You may want to justify yourself, but the statement has no effect on whether a lender will extend credit to you or not. It is irrelevant. The statement will only draw further attention to negative reports on your credit history.
    ?
Have different types of credit if you want to fix your credit. How much credit and what kinds you have available both affect your credit score. You can raise your credit score along with paying them promptly by having to pay various types of credit, like credit cards, mortgages, or auto loans.
    ?
If you credit score is good, you should have no problem purchasing a house and obtaining a mortgage. If you pay your mortgage as agreed, your credit score will rocket into the stratosphere. Having a major asset like a house also looks good to potential creditors. These benefits will pay off if you need to secure a loan.
    ?
If you see errors on your credit reports, dispute them with the credit agency. You should contact the credit bureaus both online and by certified letter; be sure to include proof of your claims. Your letter should be sent with a request for return receipt, so you can have a record that it was received by the reporting agency.
    ?
Do not assume that a lawyer is being honest when he or she claims that they can fix your credit instantly. Due to the large number of people experiencing credit difficulties, predatory lawyers have sprung up who charge big fees for credit repair services that are either useless or illegal. Prior to contacting any lawyer for help fixing your credit, investigate him or her thoroughly.
    ?
If your poor credit score frustrates you, try using these tips to change it. The helpful tips help stop your credit score from falling and make it go up instead

Britain wins no medals for building homes | Money | The Guardian

Building site for new homes Milton Keynes

Britain is now building the lowest number of houses in nearly a century. Photograph: Alamy

Why aren't we building more houses? The latest official figures reveal a worrying decline in the construction industry, with just 21,540 new home building starts in England in the second quarter of 2012. We are now building the lowest number of houses in nearly a century, running at less than a third of the level to meet demand, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. "Something bold is desperately needed," it says.

What we are seeing is catastrophic market failure. The population of England and Wales is rising rapidly, up by 3.7 million in the past decade alone according to the latest census figures, the biggest rise since national records began in 1801.

Rents are rising inexorably. Figures from one of the UK's biggest lettings agents showed private rents up again in July to an average of ?725 a month, and the pace of rent inflation is picking up. Meanwhile, house prices, while flat in many parts of the country, remain at extraordinarily elevated levels. Groups such as the Walthamstow co-op we feature here have had to go to extreme lengths to create an affordable living space.

Evidently, demand is there, but the supply is not forthcoming. The obvious reason is finance. Prospective buyers, especially the young, cannot get mortgages without stumping up huge deposits, and few can do so. Various initiatives by the government, such as the New Homes Bonus, are clearly having no impact. Every round of "quantitative easing" (printing money) goes into the vaults of the cash-strapped banks rather than into financing new housing development.

Neither is it just about the green belt rules, though they must be relaxed. In my urbanised patch of south-east London sizeable sites have lain empty for years while property prices have escalated by 25%. When the shortage of housing is so intense, when construction workers are losing their jobs, and when the price you can sell the product is so high, it beggars belief that development is not taking place.

One solution, barely tried yet in the UK, is build-to-let. Regular readers will know of my concerns over buy-to-let, largely a zero-sum game where landlords have displaced young buyers and pushed up prices. Build-to-let is different, about increasing supply, which should cap rents and soften house price increases.

This week I met one company, Hearthstone, which aims to raise ?500m to invest in residential property, much of it new-build for letting. Aviva is rumoured to be putting together a ?1bn fund to invest in new-build for let. If so, it will take us back to when insurance companies, not banks, were the major financiers and developers of private housing.

In the 1930s a housebuilding boom led Britain out of the slump. We've shown with the Olympics that we can build magnificent facilities on time. Can we now do that with housing?

? Our condolences to the family of Robin Stoddart, who for many years was a regular contributor to Jobs & Money. He died on 3 August aged 77. A service of thanksgiving will be held at St Dunstan's church, Monks Risborough, at 2pm on Tuesday, 28 August.

Get high quality Vivariums - Amy Jones's blog

?Getting a pet has become something totally different than it used to be. As people became more daring, they started focusing their attention on more exotic pets. Some people get snakes, lizards, iguanas, or other reptiles, and they are often passionate about amphibians as well. If you are a fan of exotic pets like fish, or reptiles, you probably also share an interest in fish tanks and vivariums.

Fish tanks have come a long way since the first basic version that was only supposed to keep fish alive. They have evolved and have been turned into some of the most exquisite accessories that you could add to any special room in the house. If you are a fan of colorful fish, you probably have the same fondness for high quality fish tanks decorations. Due to the popularity of having colorful fish as pets, and decorating your room with special fish tanks, there is a wide offer of decorations you can use to personalize your fish tanks, just the way you prefer. You can choose to go with classic, or try a modern look, as design is all in your hands. No more settling for preset fish tanks that come in limited shapes or designs, as you can make all of your preferences come true.

If you are not a fish person, but you rather prefer more exotic pets, then perhaps vivariums might be more interesting for you. The special thing about vivariums is that they are not just home to exotic pets, as they are also home to live plants. Vivariums practically give you the chance to create a similar environment to your pet`s original habitat. This way your pet will have everything its original habitat would provide. Vivariums usually catch everyone`s eyes as they practically represent a little piece of an exotic land.

Resource Box: We offer a wide selection of? fish tanks? and vivariums that will for sure be to your liking.

PFT: Vick leaves game with hand injury

New Orleans Saints v New England PatriotsGetty Images

The NFL has provided the 32 teams with suggested talking points regarding the replacement officials.? The memo says nothing about expressing agreement with the opinions of former V.P. of officiating Mike Pereira, who has been (to put it mildly) a thorn in the league?s side during this process.

Enter Pats coach Bill Belichick.? After Thursday night?s preseason opener against the Saints, Belichick made it clear that he defers to Pereira on these matters.

?I think Mike Pereira has made his comments on the officials,? Belichick said.? ?I don?t know who knows more about NFL officiating than Mike Pereira, so we?ll leave it to him.? I?m just trying to coach our team and get our team better.? I?m not worried about what everybody else is doing; it?s not my job.?

Pereira has said that the use of replacement officials undermines the integrity of the game.? By expressly agreeing with Pereira, Belichick believes that the use of replacement officials undermines the integrity of the game.

Pereira also has said that the league is embellishing the credentials of the replacement officials, and that Shannon Eastin, the first female to officiate an NFL game, would not have been approved under normal procedures due to her participation in the 2007 World Series of Poker.

So, basically, Belichick has given the league office the finger, in passive-aggressive fashion.

That said, it?s hard to disagree with him.? Pereira knows as much as anyone about officiating.? His concerns should be taken seriously.

It remains to be seen whether other coaches will muster the nerve to agree with Belichick.

Strategically, they?d be wise to do so.? Eventually, the locked-out officials will be back, and it will be impossible for them to complete ignore who had their backs ? and who didn?t ? when making close calls in real time.

Mars rover getting reprogrammed for science

Trace the Curiosity rover's journey to Mars, and see the first pictures that the six-wheeled robot has sent back from the Red Planet.

    By Alan Boyle

NASA's Curiosity rover is in the midst of a four-day brain transplant that will give it the smarts to drive around, use its robotic arm and do all the things it's expected to do over the months and years to come.

The reprogramming marks the transition from Curiosity's space odyssey to its scientific mission. The old software, which helped Curiosity get through its "seven minutes of terror" and land safely, is being phased out. The new software is being phased in?? first on the primary computer, and then on the backup computer. During the process, science is taking a back seat.

The switchover is required because of the limitations of Curiosity's onboard memory. There are only about 4 gigabytes available for data storage, said Ben Cichy, the mission's lead flight software engineer.?When Cichy described the limitations during a briefing today at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., he made a joking reference to Curiosity teammate Bobak Ferdowsi, the "Mohawk Guy" who stirred up so much Internet buzz this week (and was sitting in the audience during today's briefing).

"My phone has a processor that's 10 times as fast as the processor on Curiosity," Cichy said. "It has 16 times as much storage as Curiosity has, and my phone doesn't have to land anything on Mars. All my phone has to do is follow Bobak's Twitter feed."

The memory limitation comes into play because the rover's hardware had to be certified as capable of standing up to the rigors of space radiation. At the time that the rover was designed and built, going back as far as eight years, Curiosity's computer firepower was considered the state of the art in radiation-hardened electronics.

Fortunately, Cichy said, JPL has a "lot of very, very talented software engineers" who could work out a system for uploading fresh software into the rover's memory during the eight-month-plus flight from Earth, and installing it while Curiosity is sitting inside Gale Crater on Mars. "When they're given a challenge, they solve it," he said.

The new software, known as R10, gives Curiosity the capability to move its 7-foot-long (2.1-meter-long) robotic arm and use all of its sampling devices, including a drill and a dust removal tool. It also upgrades the six-wheeled, nuclear-powered rover's driving smarts, so that it'll recognize obstacles autonomously and drive around them. That will be a key capability, considering that there's a 14-minute delay in communications between Earth and Mars due to the speed-of-light travel time. Past rovers were occasionally stymied because they encountered an obstacle and had to wait for instructions from Earth.

"Curiosity was born to drive," Cichy said. "So the R10 software includes the capability for Curiosity to really get out and stretch her wheels on the surface of Mars."

    Damian Dovarganes / AP

Devin Kipp, a member of the entry, descent and landing team for the Curiosity rover mission, gestures while teammates Gavin Mendeck (left) and Steve Sell (right) look on. Kipp said the picture of the spacecraft's working parachute, seen on the screen behind him, was "about the most beautiful picture I've seen in my life."

During the four-day reprogramming operation, Curiosity's science team will be analyzing the images that the rover took of its surroundings at Gale Crater and deciding what the next steps should be. Depending on how the operation goes, Curiosity's science checkout could resume on Tuesday. However, software transitions can be tricky: Shortly after the Spirit rover landed in 2004, a computer glitch took it out of action for two weeks. Fortunately, that rover recovered and went on to send back five years of scientific observations from Gusev Crater. Opportunity, Spirit's twin, is still going strong at Endeavour Crater, half a world away.

Scientists are hoping for even more from the larger and more capable Curiosity rover. The goals of its two-year, $2.5 billion mission are to analyze billions of years' worth of geological history contained in the rock layers of a 3-mile-high (5-kilometer-high) mountain known as Aeolis Mons or Mount Sharp, and to look for the chemical signs of potential habitability. Although Curiosity isn't designed to detect life directly, its findings could point the way for future life-detection missions.

    More about the mission:

??The engineers on Curiosity's team for entry, descent and landing?? or EDL for short?? recapped the story behind Curiosity's seven minutes of terror. Guidance lead Gavin Mendeck reported that the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft weathered accelerations of up to 11 G's during the descent. "If you were a human on board ... it would be a rough ride," he said. The rover landed about a mile and a half downrange of the central aim point, probably due to tail winds and a last-minute maneuver, Mendeck said. "We're still happy where we landed," he said. A more detailed review will be conducted once all of the EDL data is downloaded.

??The mission's project scientist, John Grotzinger, explained why the map quadrangle where Curiosity landed was nicknamed Yellowknife, after the capital of Canada's Northwest Territories. "If you ask what is the port of call that you leave from to go on the great missions of geological mapping to the oldest rocks in North America, it's Yellowknife," he said. Similarly, Curiosity will drive off from its landing site to study what may be some of the oldest rocks on the Red Planet. "It's sort of a tradition that was started here on Earth, and we're trying to do it on Mars," Grotzinger said.

??Curiosity team member Allen Chen said it was a good thing that NASA delayed the launch of Mars Science Laboratory by two years, even though that added hundreds of millions of dollars to the mission cost. "We weren't ready in 2009," he said. "Having that extra time certainly gave us the opportunity to make sure everything was going to work right. The proof is in the pudding."

??The team members said they were gratified by the public response to the mission, but one of the engineers, Devin Kipp, said the "enormous feeling of accomplishment" tasted even sweeter than fame. All of them were clearly taking the public adulation in stride. "I got recognized in the pizza parlor ... that was a little weird for me," Chen joked.

??We featured Curiosity's picture of Mount Sharp as the subject of our "Where in the Cosmos" picture puzzle today on the Cosmic Log Facebook page, and it took mere seconds for Joe Chmill Jr. to tell us that Aeolis Mons is the alternate name for the mountain. (Aeolis Mons is actually the name that's recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Mount Sharp is an unofficial moniker.) To reward Chmill's quick wits and fast fingers, we're sending him a pair of 3-D glasses, as well as red-blue renderings of Aeolis Mons and yours truly. Several runners-up are also eligible to receive 3-D glasses: AZ Ducky, John Mulligan and Ken Mullins. Karti tells Clinton Khartoum's problem with Juba is security WORLD ...

    world_news_tomorrow-wnt-news-today-cnn--reut-world-news-

WORLD? NEWS TOMORROW -KHARTOUM: Sudanese foreign minister Ali Karti told his US counterpart Hillary Clinton that the main problem with the South Sudan is the security issue, the official SUNA reported Wednesday.

US Secretary of State, began on Wednesday an 11-day tour in the African continent where she will discuss issues related to peace, security and development. On Thursday she is expected in Juba for talks with the President Salva Kiir.

State department spokesperson Patrick Ventrell on Wednesday told reporters in Washington that Clinton during her visit to Juba will discuss the urgency to reach an agreement with Khartoum in the ongoing process mediated by the African Union in Addis Ababa.

During a telephone call he received from Clinton on Wednesday, Karti reiterated Sudan commitment to peaceful coexistence with all its neighbours stressing that the problem with the Republic of South Sudan is mainly a security one, the agency reported.

The Sudanese minister who blamed Juba for supporting rebel movements in Darfur, Blue Nile and South Kordofan urged the US top diplomat to press Juba to disengage with the SPLM-N rebels and to stop harbouring Darfur holdout groups.

?In the absence of security there cannot be a permanent agreement between the two countries,? he pointed out.

Juba denies any support to the Sudanese rebel groups however, in the past different American official did ask the South Sudanese president to stop their support for rebel groups.

In Addis Ababa, talks on security issues are stalled as Khartoum continues to refuse an African Union map to operationalise a buffer zone the parties agreed in November 2011. Sudanese government wants the mediation to establish the demilitarised zone based on the map according to which the South Sudan got its independence

Clinton, according to SUNA, reaffirmed the American support to Addis Ababa talks in order to reach a lasting settlement on the unresolved issues the two countries are negotiating since one year ago.

She further said that during her visit to Juba she will reiterate the American position that urging more seriousness in the discussions. At the same time, she requested Khartoum to engage seriously in the talks.

Washington is seen the ally of Juba in Khartoum and Sudanese official say that Juba could not continue to support rebels and take such intransigent stance with its support.

Also due to the US sanctions on Sudan, Washington has bad relations with Khartoum and any initiative by the American officials is suspiciously scrutinised by the Sudanese government.

During her telephone conversation, Clinton also raised the humanitarian access to the rebel held areas in South Kordofan and Blue Nile. She urged Karti to allow aid groups to reach these areas.

The Sudanese minister said his government accept the tripartite initiative and expressed some observations regarding its implementation, stressing that the operation will be allowed once an agreement is reached over this issue.

The mediation suspended the humanitarian track on 25 July as the divergences are much too large between the two sides.

The SPLM-N says ready for a one-month ceasefire but asks to distribute the aid from South Sudanese borders. Khartoum sticks to its nine-point agreement with the UN, African Union and Arab League and say only government agreed actors can distribute the aid and stress it should be done from the Sudan.
