MPs to quiz BBC chief over Savile sex abuse claims

LONDON (Reuters) - The chief of Britain's public broadcaster, the BBC, is to answer questions before a parliamentary committee about child sex abuse allegations spanning six decades against the late Jimmy Savile, an eccentric children's show host and charity fundraiser.

The scandal involving Savile, a household name to millions, has piled pressure on the state-funded broadcaster and raised questions about Britain's celebrity culture.

Police believe the BBC host was a serial offender who may have abused 60 victims, with accusations spanning six decades up until 2006. The accusations have surfaced since his death last year at the age of 84.

Some of his alleged victims say they were targeted on BBC premises at the height of Savile's fame in the 1970s and 80s and said there was a culture of sexual abuse and secrecy at the broadcaster with their accusations dismissed by bosses.

The chairman of parliament's media committee said he would be calling BBC Director General George Entwistle to answer questions next week.

The BBC has launched its own investigations, alongside a police inquiry, into the allegations, which might have involved other celebrities, and over the decision to shelve a documentary by its flagship Newsnight show into Savile's alleged sex crimes, leading to accusations of a cover-up.

On Monday, the Labour Party urged the BBC to ensure nothing similar could happen again.

"Everyone has been sickened by the vile abuse perpetrated by Jimmy Savile," Labour's culture spokeswoman Harriet Harman told parliament.

"What has deepened the revulsion is this happened at the BBC - an institution so loved and trusted, it's known as 'Auntie'. This has cast a stain on the BBC."

The BBC's private sector rival ITV aired sexual assault allegations against Savile earlier this month, triggering a media storm and accusations that the BBC had mishandled or even covered up the case.

"The allegations emerging around Jimmy Savile are absolutely horrifying," Conservative Culture Minister Maria Miller said. "My thoughts are with those affected and their families who have suffered in silence for decades."

Miller said claims against other celebrities were "very troubling".

In a sombre parliamentary debate, MPs accused Savile, a cigar-chomping former DJ who travelled in a Rolls Royce and won a knighthood from the Queen for his charity work, of using his fame to abuse children.

"Clearly, it was Jimmy Savile's celebrity status that gave him a sense of impunity," Harman said.

Beatles fans bamboozled by London train station

It has to be the most famous pedestrian crossing in the world, immortalized by the Beatles on the cover of their Abbey Road album in 1969.

Situated just outside the north London EMI studios, the crossing enjoys listed status for its "cultural and historical importance" and draws thousands of tourists every year.

But a growing number of visitors hoping to take photos of themselves recreating the enigmatic, single-file crossing of the famous foursome are finding themselves in a very different part of London - thanks to a railway station.

Since the station was built last year and named after another Abbey Road at least 10 miles away, tourists have been descending on the distinctly less glamorous east London neighborhood of West Ham.

Instead of the leafy mansions and prim tree-lined streets one might expect of one of the most expensive areas in Britain, visitors are met with a train depot and a series of industrial parks.

"There are always loads of tourists here," said local resident Jack Walker. "They get here, look around, wonder where the crossing is, find out it's on the other side of London, and head back to the station."

Tourist misfortune, however, sometimes makes for much local hilarity.

Rui Araujo, a council patrol officer, recalls watching a young American couple mimicking the group's famous crosswalk pose, apparently unaware that the pock-marked east London zebra-crossing bears little resemblance to the real thing.

Kirpal Singh is not complaining though. His Star Newsagents has seen a daily average of 30-40 additional customers, many of whom buy bus passes or stock up on drinks and chocolate to sustain themselves on the long trek back across the city.

No laughing matter
But while a few East London Abbey Road shops have benefited from the mix-up, a number of St John's Wood businesses - situated in the leafy residential district that is home to Abbey Road Studios - are failing to see the funny side.

Blaming the confusion and corresponding loss of tourist revenue on the construction of the Docklands Light Railway link (DLR) at East London Abbey Road, they are lobbying Transport for London (TfL) to change the name of the offending station.

Beatles get scrambled in 'Abbey Road' cover made of breakfast food

"It was a bigger problem over the summer when everybody was already out in east London and using the DLR for the Olympics, but it's still an issue for us, as numbers are down" said Zoe Waterman of the Beatles coffee shop.

Thus far, however, TfL have shown no inclination to change tack.

"It is unfortunate that some visitors sometimes get confused by the odd duplicate place names in our large and varied city... but, this situation is also a reminder that nothing beats some in-depth research," a spokesman said.

Australian tourist Sam Wharton offered a slightly more nuanced take as he photographed the real crossing: "I had no difficulties in finding this place, you've got to be a bit dim to go to the wrong end of London, right?"

For the record, those thinking of visiting the real thing will find St John's Wood tube station a considerably more convenient starting point than Abbey Road.

The broke-down side of biodegradable and compostable packaging

There?s a lot of green talk in the packaging world these days. Recyclable, biodegradable, compostable? you know the drill. What?s not to love about plates and cups that just happen to help the world as they degrade? Well, a lot actually. The fact that a specific type of packaging hails from the beloved and royal family Green doesn?t guarantee it to be the most environmentally beneficial option.

Biodegradable (material that will eventually break down, not bound by time constraints) and compostable (material that degrades at the same rate as paper, leaves no toxic residue) containers are some of the greenest goods around, right? Yeah sure, under the right circumstances that is. Truth be told, packaging specially constructed to biodegrade may do more harm than a traditional plastic bottle in a landfill void of oxygen and sunlight. Especially given the fact that plastic bottles can be recycled and the earth-friendly types of packaging tend to linger, building up the enormity of landfills.

The hype is high for eco-packaging, but society needs more than the steam of innovation to make alternatives to recycling a fully functioning reality. Until then, let?s break down the current infrastructure surrounding the end-of-life practices for standard recyclables and eco-based packaging.

Recyclable packaging?

How are recyclable containers disposed of? You set them on your curb. It doesn?t get much simpler than that. Though the U.S. recycling program has great room to grow and develop, recycling is by far the most readily available form of disposal that doesn?t default to a landfill.

Not only is the recycling infrastructure well established, there are several other benefits to consider when determining whether this traditional practice is more environmentally sound than other up-and-coming green techniques. For instance, using recyclable containers is often an environmentally sound choice given that the resin can frequently be used for the same purpose, several times over. The use of products made from recycled goods is a valuable point too, as the benefit on the environment has already been completed.

Biodegradable and Compostable packaging?

Unlike recycling, you can?t collect all your biodegradable and compostable goods and put them out front on Monday morning for the compost man. At least not in most cities you can?t. And often times even that heaping pile of stuff in your yard that you call compost won?t do the trick. Commercial composting facilities are the only sure bet for proper breakdown. And as surprising as it might sound, these said facilities are few and far between, even in major metropolitan environments.

So, what?s to be said about the current state of eco-friendly packaging? Innovation is great, but the market has to sustain it. The practice of recycling is pervasive throughout our country, allowing for the proper processing of such containers. Biodegradable and compostable packaging may be the future of the packaging industry, but a likewise, proper infrastructure must be implied before these sustainable packaging options can actually fulfill their purpose successfully.

Monday, October 8th - New Word ***MUSIC***

It is Monday for sure...... and I hope your weeks are all starting well! I spent my lunch hour at a home improvement store today?choosing paint colors and buying painting supplies. ?My week and weekend are going to be spent painting my living room and my kitchen cabinets. ?Wish me luck - I might need it!!

Before I get started on all of that, I have a new challenge word to release. ?Our new word is MUSIC. ?I wasn't really sure how our design team would use this word. ?It does seem a bit challenging to me, but they seemed to have no trouble at all and revealed some beautiful layouts and projects.

In addition, the DT is currently voting on three past challenges, so within the next week we should have some exciting new winner announcements!

I hope you are inspired to create a page of your own! ?If so, link it up to the right and we will be voting on a winner to receive a prize from?Scrap Locker.

Thank you for playing along. ?We love to see everyone's creations!
