Pregnancy Diary: Baby 12 in 2012 ? Week 37 ? Larger Family Life

We have now passed the 37 week mark and the final countdown now begins with only ten days until we meet Baby 12!

I won?t repeat how I am amazed at how quickly time has passed during this pregnancy because you?ve heard it all before ? but it really has flown, hasn?t it?!

Heartburn is an almost permanent resident within my body and it?s fighting the eviction notices of any antacid landlords I can send in. ?The braxton hicks have moments where they become so intense that they take my breath away. ?Yet still, apart from that and the occasional round ligament pain, mainly whilst I?m tossing and turning in bed ? which really can?t be described as tossing and turning but more akin to a beached whale trying to heave and hurl itself back into the water ? I?m doing well.

A midwifery appointment last week provided continued reassurance that all is good. ?Baby 12 is no longer lying back to back and has now flipped around and lying, well, sort of diagonally. ?With the doppler measuring the heartbeat at approximately 126bpm both the midwife and I guessed that baby is a boy (which has been my feeling all along) given the old wives tale of a heartbeat above 140 beats per minute indicating that baby is a girl, and beats below 140 per minute for a boy. ?It is all theory and tales though, with no guarantee and to be taken lightly with a pinch of salt. ?My only concern is that I am safely holding our new baby after a straightforward, uncomplicated delivery next week.

The hospital is still disallowing filming of the birth and I am surprised at just how disappointed I am about it. ?I mean, I knew I would be disappointed should they refuse, but I am really quite sad at having to miss this opportunity to have Baby 12?s arrival recorded in such a rare and special way for what seems like no real or valid reason. ?I am still hoping and praying that the Powers-That-Be there will have a change of heart. ?What a beautiful moment it would be to have for posterity? and of course, for sharing with those of you who would like to see it too!

Still, ten days to go.

Arrest made in rape of woman on LA County bus

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A man was arrested Friday in the rape of a mentally disabled woman aboard a near-empty Los Angeles County bus during rush-hour commute.

Authorities believe Kerry Trotter, 20, boarded the bus with the 18-year-old woman on Wednesday at a stop in suburban Culver City before she was followed to the back of the vehicle and assaulted.

One passenger among the several onboard tried to alert the driver but was unsuccessful, sheriff's officials said without elaborating.

It was the third rape so far this year on county buses that annually carry millions of people.

"This is an extremely rare occurrence," said Marc Littman, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Trotter was booked for investigation of rape and was being held on $1 million bail, authorities said. It wasn't immediately known if he had retained an attorney.

He has previous convictions for grand theft and possession of a controlled substance, according to online court records.

Sheriff's investigators said they received an anonymous tip that led to Trotter's arrest after an image of the suspected attacker taken by a surveillance camera on the bus was publicly released.

The attack lasted about 10 minutes before the man stopped and exited the bus, authorities said. After the assault, the woman, who has the mental capacity of a 10-year-old, reported it to the driver who notified authorities, sheriff's Sgt. Dan Scott said.

Authorities have not yet located the person who witnessed the rape. Scott would not say if investigators found DNA evidence.

Bus drivers are trained to call transit dispatchers when they become aware of a possible crime, Littman said. If a crime is in progress, there is a silent alarm on board that can be tripped.

It was unclear if the driver saw what transpired. He was being interviewed by authorities.

"We want to see if protocol was followed as well," Littman said.

Family narrowly escapes as tree destroys living room | Darien Times

Jim Carpenter and his son, Evan, on top of the white pine that crashed through their home after Hurricance Sandy ripped it from the ground.

Illuminated by candles, Aimee Carpenter sat at her desk working on new ideas for her renown website, CraftyFarmGirl.com, as Hurricane Sandy tore through the region. Outside, the sound of steady 50-mph winds whipped across her Tokeneke Trail lawn, churning up debris and knocking power out to 92% of the town.

As she sat working, her back began aching. She went to the kitchen to grab some Bengay. As she handed the tube to her daughter, an earth-shattering crash exploded from the family room.

?We went running to see what this amazingly crazy noise was,? Carpenter told The Times. An 80-foot tall white pine tree crashed right on top of the desk. It crushed the area where she had been sitting a few moments earlier.

?My backache saved my life,? she said. The tree destroyed that corner of her house, mangling rafters and transforming their once warm living space into a cacophony of broken glass, splintered wood and shattered bricks.

?I don?t scare easy,? Carpenter said. ?And this was scary.?

?My son and his school friend were sitting in the room at the time,? she said, ?and had boards and debris raining down on them as I ran in to pull them out.?

But it wasn?t quite over. There were still lit candles with plenty of combustibles nearby. A potential fire in the making.

They grabbed some glasses of water and tried to snuff out the flames as it tickled nearby debris. The first attempt failed. The candles were out of reach. With little time to spare, they tried again. Success.

There was however a silver lining ? nobody was hurt.

?We lost four major trees in total on our property, but with no damage to human or animal I consider us lucky,? she said. ?All animals are fine, although the farm looks like a war zone and there is fencing down everywhere.?

Her son Eric and his friend Leo were sitting on the couch when the tree crashed around them, but they remained unharmed.

The Carpenter?s home is framed with bricks, which absorbed much of the impact as the tree came down, said Aimee?s husband, Jim.

?If we had a wood-framed house, our kids would be dead,? he said.

Most of what was broken is replaceable, Carpenter said, but a folk art collection that was hanging on the wall suffered some damage and will have to be repaired. It took tree crews two days to removed the evergreen from their home. For a while their roof was covered with a tarp, now it?s covered with plywood. Jim said the whole section of the house might need to be torn down and rebuilt.

Outside, the giant root ball from the pine lay perpendicular to the ground. One of two chicken coops that sit on the Carpenter?s property was pushed to an angle as the roots upheaved. Jim said the chickens tried to roost in the crooked coop, but were having trouble navigating the awkward angles, which made for a humorous sight.

?Walking into the coop you kind of get vertigo,? Aimee said. The Carpenters sell fresh eggs to area neighbors and they also have several goats, and Aimee was learning how to make cheese in Vermont when she interviewed with The Times for this story.

No animals were hurt from the storm, but their goat fence was damaged in several places.

The day after the storm, an entrepreneurial and philanthropic spirit came over their 12-year-old daughter, Maia. She put up a hot chocolate stand to cater to the many line and tree crews who worked around the clock to restore power to the town.

?People asked us if we were shocked and I said, ?No?,? Jim said. ?It only lasted a second. It?s only if somebody?s hurt or dead do you have a serious problem. If everybody?s alive ? you?ve got a hole in your roof. That can be fixed.?

The Economics of the Fiscal Cliff | Antony P Mueller | FINANCIAL ...

As 2013 gets closer, the calls get louder to reverse earlier decisions by the US government and Congress that would lead to public spending cuts and higher tax rates beginning next year. The United States is moving towards a ?fiscal cliff? we are told which would bring down the American economy because of the massive ?extraction? of funds. What is behind these claims? What are the determinants of public debt, the essentials of debt management and where is the economy headed?

Public Debt

The size of a country?s total public debt is the result of past budget deficits.? A budget deficit comes into existence when a government spends more than it collects as revenue. If taxes and other sources of government receipts fall short of public spending, government needs to borrow. With each new budget deficit the size of debt increases and along with the principal the obligation to pay interest also rises.

As an indicator of the debt burden serves the so-called debt coefficient which relates overall debt to the gross domestic product (gdp). In the light of this number a rise of total debt need not necessarily denote an increase of the relative debt burden. If the rise of total debt is matched by an equivalent increase of national income, relative debt as measured by the debt coefficient remains constant. By the same token, the relative debt burden would increase even without new debt if national production should shrink.

The distinction between the so-called ?primary deficit? and that part of the budget deficit which pertains to interest payments is important because the amount of interest payments varies not only with the size of outstanding debt but also with the interest rate.

When assessing the debt burden, the rate of price inflation constitutes an important factor. Price inflation devalues outstanding debt. This happens in a creeping way when inflation rates are low and in a dramatic way when inflation rates are high. In the case of hyperinflation when ordinary goods of daily consumption fetch prices in the billions or trillions even a gargantuan public debt would evaporate. However, a deliberate fabrication of hyperinflation in order to get rid of the debt burden can hardly count as a rational strategy. Such a policy would come at the price of wreaking havoc with the economy as a whole.

In order to capture the impact of the price level on the debt burden, one must distinguish between the nominal rate and the real rate of interest. The current nominal interest rate is composed of the real interest rate plus the expected inflation rate. While the real interest rate is relatively stable, the expected inflation rate and therefore nominal interest rates are volatile because of the uncertainty concerning the future inflation rate.

Determinants of Public Debt

Public debt in terms of the debt coefficient ? total debt in per cent of gross domestic production ? will rise or fall according to the movement of the following determinants.

The relative debt burden will be higher the more

government will spend
the interest rate will rise
there has been debt accumulation in the past.

The relative debt burden will be lower the more

tax revenue will augment
the rate of price inflation will rise
economic growth will increase.

Representing the impact of the variables on the debt coefficient with a plus sign (+) for increase and the negative sign (-) for reduction, one can summarize these findings in a simple table.

Debt Management

According to the enumeration above (table 1) it may appear easy to construct a package for bringing down the debt burden without cutting expenditures. Such a simplistic plan would include measures to

raise taxes
decrease the interest rate
increase price inflation
stimulate economic growth
reduce size of accumulated debt (by forgiveness or default)

The problem with such a policy is that while each measure would work in isolation, the factors are interdependent and therefore such a package would contain contradictory measures.

Taxes: A government cannot simply raise taxes. All it can do is to impose the tax rate. Higher tax rates do not imply higher tax revenue but a rate that is set too high can actually lead to lower tax revenue.

Interest rates: Central banks control the nominal interest rate mainly for short maturities by setting the policy rate such as the federal funds rate in the case of the United States. The monetary authorities have much less power over the interest rate for longer maturities. An additional limitation of interest rate policy comes from the fact that when nominal interest rates hit zero bound the occurrence of price deflation would mean rising real interest rates.

Inflation: The monetary authorities are able to push the monetary base but the size of money in circulation results from the interaction of borrowers and lenders in the financial markets.

Economic growth: The long-term rate of economic growth depends on factors beyond manipulation by fiscal and monetary policies. Economic growth is the result of a confluence of hard and soft factors that include the quality of macroeconomic management, governance and culture. Education, infrastructure and the legal framework exert their influence on economic growth not over years but decades.

Debt reduction: One way to reduce the amount of past debt accumulation is debt forgiveness. Such a measure reduces the amount of the outstanding debt right away and lowers the coefficient. A well-negotiated debt reduction may contribute to lower interest rates and accelerate an economic recovery. Economic expansion would mean an increase of government revenue particularly when it is accompanied by lower interest payments. Yet granting debt forgiveness and managing an orderly debt restructuring depends on the willingness of the lenders. Whether lenders agree on rescheduling in order to reduce the debt burden depends not only on financial factors but very much on the geostrategic position of the indebted country when foreign lending is involved as it is mostly the case with public debt.

Default: Another way of reducing the amount of current debt is through default. Yet deliberate nonpayment provides no way out of the debt trap. Such a policy would forfeit access to the capital market and crush economic growth right away. Any kind of default exacerbates a return to prosperity. The detrimental impact of default on economic growth may be long-lasting. As easy as it is to lose confidence as hard is it to regain trust.

Is There a Way Out of the Debt Trap?

An effective debt reduction strategy, which would bring down the debt coefficient, must address both variables of the debt quotient. Such a policy must seek to bring down total debt combined with lifting the rate of economic growth. It makes no sense to bring down debt when at the same time the economy would shrink and the gross domestic product would fall. Likewise the relative debt burden would not go away even with a larger gross domestic product, when the boost of economic growth rates has come mainly from more public spending. What is needed in order to bring down the debt coefficient is a reduction of absolute debt in combination with a larger economy.

The way to bring down total debt is to cut spending in combination with higher rates of economic growth which would require a boost in private investment. Only a very superficial analysis would point to lower interest rates as the way to get more investment. If the central bank forces down interest rates in order to stimulate more investment, it will provoke investment errors. Because of the resulting economic distortions due to these malinvestments, such a kind of economic growth would not be sustainable.

In order to achieve enduring debt reduction, spending cuts must be accompanied by an improvement of the investment climate for private enterprise. This happened after the end of World War II in the Western world when the reduction of military spending went hand in hand with a return to the principles of free markets. Different from Roosevelt?s anti-capitalist rhetoric that had prolonged the Great Depression and the government?s political sway over the war economy that has suppressed free enterprise, the decades after World War II saw the return to solid capitalist economic principles and economic growth accelerated despite massive budget cuts.

The failure of a country such a Greece to bring down the debt quotient results from the fact that the various Greek governments before and after the debt crisis have failed to coalesce the policy of spending cuts with adequate measures to increase private business confidence and to liberate the economy. Greece is the exemplary case how the march towards the debt crisis begins as a joy ride and ends in a horror trip. The higher the debt burden, the harder it is to restrain its future growth. Passing through the limit from the manageable to the unmanageable size of public debt goes without much notice. It is only after the barrier is broken that the trouble begins. Then it is often too late for a turn-around. More often than not the ride over the cliff into state bankruptcy happens as if programmed once the critical threshold is taken.

Conclusion

Theory and evidence show that in order to overcome a debt crisis, policy must combine the debt reduction program with incentives for private enterprise to fill up quickly and in an efficient way the space that is left by government. With the right incentives in place, private business will generate employment and income not despite but because government does cut spending. The task ahead not only for the US but for all countries which are in a debt trap is to bring down debt in combination with a forceful surge towards free enterprise.

New guideline for DNA sequences could prevent erroneous data

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) ? DNA sequence data is an indispensable source of research information in biology. But not all data are reliable. Almost 10% of all fungal DNA sequences are, for example, incorrectly identified to species level. A international team of researchers, with it's core at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, has therefore prepared a guide to assist the scientific community in the quality control process.

A new scientific study sees the researchers putting together a number of guidelines to help other researchers to ensure a high level of quality among their newly generated DNA sequences.

DNA sequences make it possible to study biological samples and environments at a level of detail that traditional tools, such as microscopes, cannot provide. It is, for example, possible to investigate what species are present in seemingly barren substrates such as soil and seawater. Such studies often reveal an astonishing and hitherto unimagined diversity, and biology has made major advances as the use of DNA-based methods has become more widespread.

But as with many other sources of information, DNA sequences vary in quality and reliability. Several studies have found considerable quality problems in existing DNA sequence databases.

To verify ones DNA Sequence dataset for basic quality and authenticity has thus become an important part of biological research.

"Many researchers perceive quality control as difficult," says Henrik Nilsson at the University of Gothenburg. "There are, quite simply, no guidelines that you can hand out to new or established researchers so that everyone is using the same approach. Which is why there are major differences in how, and to what extent, quality control is carried out in the research community."

Henrik Nilsson is the lead author of a new scientific article on DNA sequence quality which has been published in the open-access journal MycoKeys.

One complication is that the software that is available to carry out parts of the quality control is cumbersome and often requires considerable computer capacity. The research group feels that it is not appropriate to require all biologists to have access to and be able to use such complex computer systems.

This is why they have written an article describing how quality control can be carried out manually without any tools beyond an Internet browser.

The article features a number of principles and observations on DNA sequences at different quality stages. Although the guidelines focus on fungi, where DNA sequences have had a particularly significant impact as a research instrument, they are general and can be used for most genes and groups of organisms.

The guidelines relate to traditional DNA sequencing as it is used in systematics, taxonomy and ecology.

The researchers hope that it will help readers to improve their DNA sequences and so halt the trend of increasing noise in the public DNA sequence databases.

(CNN) ? For the first time, same-sex marriage has been approved by a popular vote in the United States.

Voters in Maryland and Maine passed referendums by narrow margins cementing the right for people to marry, regardless of gender.

The words man and woman ?relating to the marital relationship or familial relationships must be construed to be gender-neutral for all purposes,? Maine?s act says. ?Civil marriage laws allow gay and lesbian couples to obtain a civil marriage license,? reads Maryland?s.

Results of a vote on the same issue was still pending in Washington, as was a measure that would ban same-sex marriage in Minnesota.

?History was made tonight,? said Paul Guequierre, spokesman for Human Rights Campaign, which fought for the ballot box victories for same-sex couples.

Election Day brought two additional gains for proponents of same-sex marriage, said the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

?Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin became the first out gay U.S. senator,? GLAAD spokesman Rich Ferraro said. ?President Obama becomes the first acting president to support marriage equality and win re-election.?

The two ballots that passed, called ?Question 1? in Maine and ?Question 6? in Maryland, contain similar language and also explicitly mention the right of clergy to refuse to wed gay and lesbian couples, if it goes against their religious convictions.

?This chapter does not require any member of the clergy to perform or any church, religious denomination or other religious institution to host any marriage in violation of the religious beliefs of that member of the clergy, church, religious denomination or other religious institution,? Maine?s Question 1 states.

The governments of both states had passed laws permitting same-sex marriage, but activists opposed to the laws collected enough signatures to put them to a ballot, said Fred Sainz spokesman for HRC, which raised $32 million for its campaigns on the referendums that included radio and television ads, social media strategy and on-the-ground canvassing by thousands of volunteers.

Sainz believes the effort paid off. A similar referendum in Maine failed in 2009, when voters rejected their governor?s decision to allow same-sex marriage. Tuesday?s results represent a turnaround.

Thirty-eight states have passed bans on marriages between people of the same gender, mostly by amending their constitutions to define marriage as the union between a man and a woman.

In the six states ? Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire and New York ? and the District of Columbia where gays and lesbians have previously won marriage rights, it was because of actions taken by judges or legislators, not voters.

National polls have recently shown a shift in attitudes towards same-sex marriage, with a majority of Americans now approving of marriages between two men or two women.

Satechi Slim Surge Protector

The Satechi Slim Surge Protector ($15.99 direct) takes a simple and straightforward concept and expands it in a logical direction. People rely on power outlets every day, after all, and those same people also need to charge USB devices, so why not integrate the two into a cohesive package? Throw in the added benefit of surge protection, and you've got the Slim Surge Protector in a nutshell. It's not earth-shatteringly innovative, but it's a practical, affordable solution for anyone interested in charging their gizmos in one central spot or any who simply wants to protect their gadgets from the perils of electrical spikes and surges.

The Slim Surge Protector's chassis measures 5 inches tall and 3.5 inches wide. It's constructed entirely out of black plastic, with a matte-finished rear and glossy face. While I'm fairly certain that most people don't take aesthetics into consideration when purchasing something as mundane as a surge protector, it's still worth noting that the glossy finish on the face attracts a considerable amount of smudging after a while, which may irk some given the heavy amount of hand traffic the Slim Surge Protector will see in the form of plugging and unplugging electronics.

The outlet arrangement on the Slim Surge Protector's face is judiciously arranged in two vertical rows, with three protected power outlets on top and two USB charging ports on the bottom. For all intents and purposes it's a simple, uncluttered layout, though it would been better to see a bit more space between the power outlets in order to accommodate wider plugs, especially in the case of some smartphone chargers.

In between the two rows is a hole for an optional socket screw, which comes in handy for reducing torque when you've got five devices tugging in different directions. Since the optional socket screw provides an added measure of support, one can't help but wonder why the rear of the Slim Surge Protector's chassis features a plastic prong that juts out in addition to its three prong plug. As a result, the Slim Surge Protector can only be plugged into the top portion in a two-plug wall outlet since the plastic prong is designed be inserted into the bottom outlet. It would have been more sensible to not include this plastic prong so the Slim Surge Protector could be inserted into either the top or bottom plug in order to yield the most use out of a two-plug wall outlets.

An LED indicator on the top of the Slim Surge Protector glows green to indicate when it's protecting your stuff from spikes and surges. Accordingly, when the indicator is no longer lit, the Slim Surge Protector has ceased to shield your devices from electrical surges. In addition to its basic surge protection function, the Slim Surge Protector also features built-in Safety Shutdown Technology, which utilizes thermal fuses to prevent power from flowing to the unit, thereby protecting your stuff against fire and other damage in the event that a power spike occurs. Again, if the LED indicator isn't glowing, then that means that this feature has becomes disabled. Luckily, the Slim Surge Protector comes with a one-year warranty, so you'll be covered if you see that green light not working within that time period.

The Slim Surge Protector has a 2.1 amp output, giving it enough juice to charge most, if not all, smartphones and tablets. While Satechi lists a bevy of compatible devices on its site, 2.1 amps is certainly enough for, say, a 10-inch tablet. To confirm this, I tested the Slim Surge Protector with the New Apple iPad and an iPhone 4S and found that both devices were charging properly. That said, it would behoove skeptical or extra-cautious buyers to check out the list on Satechi's site for themselves.

The Satechi Slim Surge Protector is a practical solution for users interested in charging their electronic devices in one central spot with the added benefit of surge protection. Its practicality and convenience sufficiently justify its affordable price tag.
